![]() It's why the Orange Bowl is a College Football Playoff/New Year's Six bowl game option. It's why the NFL makes it a Super Bowl destination. What does enthrall South Florida, however, is when something is an event. It's a market that isn't always invested in every single game of a team's schedule. Yet Tkachuk's arrival has hushed a number of those criticisms, while offering context to those who are not familiar with how sports fandom works in South Florida. The Panthers play in an arena that is closer to the Everglades Wildlife Management Area than Fort Lauderdale. There are too many entertainment options in South Florida. Not enough long-term success to create generational fandom. ![]() All the familiar talking points have shadowed the franchise for the majority of its existence. Markets such as South Florida face a constant crucible from the outside world when it comes to how hockey is valued. Of all the players who have come through here, he's a one-of-a-kind player." "He's changed the trajectory of this franchise. Brad Marchand is a comparable around the league somewhat in that he plays with that edge. "Jonathan Huberdeau - they are night and day different players. "To look at all the players who have come through this organization, Pavel Bure cannot compare to him," said Bill Lindsay, who spent seven seasons with the Panthers and is now a member of the team's broadcast crew. Maybe it has more to do with the realization Tkachuk might be unlike anyone the Panthers have ever seen. How can someone who is on the verge of finishing his first campaign with the Florida Panthers - a franchise that has had more than 440 players over its near-30-year history - already create this sort of discussion? Even a bit hyperbolic, or at least a manifestation of recency bias. Perhaps asking such a question is premature. Matthew Tkachuk is the star the Florida Panthers neededĬould Matthew Tkachuk become the biggest hockey star to ever come through South Florida? That’s a far cry from a society that throws its children into gladiatorial contests or makes them run through deadly mazes. The stakes of Utopia Falls are much more subtle: New Babyl is peaceful, its citizens (besides those in the quasi-penal colony, Reform Sector) are equal, no one goes hungry. So often teen science fiction and YA novels reward straight, white characters for their physical prowess or feats of extraordinary violence. (That said, if you don’t already enjoy hip-hop, this one isn’t for you.)ĭespite the familiar premise, Utopia Falls manages to stand out in a crowded genre. After the glossy stiffness of New Babyl, some Biggie and Kendrick Lamar is everything the characters and viewers could want. Its messages-the yearning, the highs and lows of success, oppression, rebellion-suit the show and its genre perfectly. Its beats are immediately infectious and a joy to move to, and the characters’ happiness in hearing it seems so real you might find it jumping through the screen. While it’s not initially clear why hip-hop is unlawful, it is an excellent choice as Utopia Falls’ musical centerpiece. ![]() In general, the actors are very successful in reacting to hip-hop like aliens who have just landed on Earth. Snoop Dogg manages to be extra charming even as a disembodied voice and is a nice tonal counterweight to the ultra-serious teenagers. Still, there’s a lot that’s smart and interesting in between whiffs of confusion and fromage. Why is hip-hop banned when other forms of music and dance aren’t just permitted but are central to New Babyl’s culture? Exactly when is this? What are the rules? Fashion seems to be forbidden, but home decoration is not, and the Authorities are allowed pompadours that would make Snooki jealous. There’s an awful lot of throat clearing in the first episode, but you’re still left with questions. The show’s other struggle (besides the actors’ uneven ability to deliver campy dialog in a believable fashion) is its speed-blurred world-building. It doesn’t let you infer that free expression and self celebration is freedom in a society that prizes conformist harmony-it just tells you so. If you’re over the age of 13, you’ll probably find that, at times, Utopia Falls is fondue-pot levels of cheesy. ![]() It has over a dozen named characters, two love triangles, two major parental identity twists, and a musical’s worth of songs and choreography packed into 10 episodes, and it all (almost) makes sense. It’s very high-concept: Its themes bounce from censorship to racism and classism to diversity to criminal justice reform to expression and art to dissention and protest. It might have the ingredients of Hunger Games or Divergent, but it also aims to be something different-something a bit more nuanced than the standard YA story. Everything about the show suggests great ambition. Hulu touts Utopia Falls as “the first-ever sci-fi hip-hop television series.” That’s more than likely true. “But personal expression is something else. It’s our strength,” the flamboyantly villain-haired Authority Phydra tells them. When they try to bring their newfound passion to the Exemplar competition, they find themselves dissidents. The archive, which is voiced by none other than Snoop Dogg himself, is only too happy to continue their musical education. From the first rhyme- It was all a dream, I used to read Word Up! magazine-they’re entranced by hip-hop. The acceptable forms of talent are limited: a modern dance/ballet hybrid, or big showy ballads about how grateful they are to their founder, who led citizens to New Babyl after a tech-fomented disaster they refer to as “the Great Flash.”Įveryone sticks to the program until two of the Exemplars stumble upon a mysterious archive of forbidden, ancient information. Every year in the city of New Babyl, the last living colony on a postapocalyptic Earth, a handful of musically gifted 16-year-olds are chosen to represent their districts in a competition called The Exemplar. To locate it even more precisely within the genre, the show is exactly what it would be like if Panem’s politely grim District 13 put on an annual talent show. ![]() Utopia Falls is a little bit Hunger Games and a little bit American Idol. ![]() Add to that time lost to injury and having to adjust to life on the Rangers it is pretty clear that 70 was a more realistic ceiling than 21-22's 90 points. Tarasenko was coming off a resurgent 90-point pace season, but there had been a few warning signs that he wasn't a new player at 30. Tanner Jeannot was clearly over drafted after his flashy goal performances in 2021-22 that he was unable to maintain, but the significant drop offs for Vladimir Tarasenko and Patrick Kane are probably the most noteworthy here. Mark Stone makes this list because he only played 43 games (and because he played some of those games injured). The fourth quarter drop off is a little concerning, but hopefully we can chalk it up to injury and he will return in full form by next season.Īnd because we can't look at most valuable without thinking about the flip side – now on to the disappointments. Up until the fourth quarter he was on a 113-point pace.Īn injury took away some time and potentially some effectiveness, so over his final quarter he paced below a point per game and ended up with the 94 points in 78 games He was able to continue much of his performance from the second half of 2021-22 while getting career high time on ice, shot rates, and expected goal numbers. Anyone who drafted him at that point was laughing. I also clearly wasn’t the only one with his ADP down at 144. Thompson was featured in this column under possible breakout candidates and while I admit to being a little skeptical that was going to eclipse his 70-point season pace from 2021-22 he clearly did so. We should note here that Tage Thompson is also center eligible on some platforms, but since he is also wing eligible in most places, that added flexibility allows him to be listed here. Which wingers provided the most value if we take into account their draft position? Name As long as the deployment and shot rates keep up a similar pace seems very doable going forward. Yes, there are a few points where numbers are a little bit inflated, and yes there are some question marks of the team's makeup next year, but Pastrnak saw career high time on ice numbers, shot rates, and expected goal numbers. This year's 113-point pace was a little bit of a surprise (as was Boston's whole season) but it looks really good. David Pastrnak was the latest drafted of the elite right wingers going into the season, which mostly makes sense after a couple of "down years" of 82- and 88-point paces. This is mostly what we would have guessed, and generally speaking these players were drafted highly. ![]() Once we have that we can compare that expected number to the player's actual number and see who performed the best based on their draft position.įirst up, who were the top five right wingers this year? Name The idea here is that if we compare the draft position to the end of year fantasy points for all players, we can get an equation that lets us say, 'on average a player with X draft position would be expected to get Y fantasy points'. These ADPs are based on preseason drafts so don't take into account leagues and drafts that started part way through the season. ![]() In addition to total fantasy points, I have also pulled Yahoo average draft position data (ADP). In order to grab all of this data I am exporting the Multicat and Big Board Reports for the full season, and doing a bit of rearranging so I can have only the pertinent fields. Obviously this means there might be some general deviations to your league, based on your settings, but it is at least a good starting point. This year the stats include goals, assists, power-play points, shots, blocks and (unfortunately) plus/minus. For the purposes of this article, we are going to use standard Yahoo point scoring to calculate the total fantasy points for each player. 'Most Valuable' is a tricky term that is going to be completely dependent on the league specific context. As a reminder, here is a brief description from that article on the process: We started last week with centers and today we move to right wings. Today we tackle the second of our Most Valuable series. Playoff Draft List Downloadable interactive spreadsheet. ![]() This time, the use of the more serious minor tonality is used as a contrast to the arrival of the playful and jubilant main theme of the Friska. For practical reasons of notation (i.e., the prolongation of the tonic minor key), Liszt chooses the key signature of F-sharp minor, until the arrival of the main theme in F-sharp major. Although the principal key of the Friska is F-sharp major, Liszt chooses to begin in the tonic minor key, F-sharp minor, which is sustained until bar 51. This procedure is directly reversed in the Friska. This device provides a contrast which intensifies the generally dark and sombre character of the lassan. However, by bar 6, the minor tonality is established. Although the lassan's principal key is C-sharp minor (with the appropriate key signature used throughout) the work opens on the tonic major chord, C-sharp major. Liszt planned his choice of keys in a remarkably symmetrical fashion. Finally, in the key of F-sharp major, there is a crescendo of prestissimo octaves, which ascend and then descend to cover almost the entire range of the keyboard and bringing the Rhapsody to a conclusion. Before the final whirlwind of sound, a moment of calm prevails in the key of F-sharp minor, recalling another of the lassan's themes, and is followed by the instruction, Cadenza ad lib. Modulations are limited almost exclusively to the dominant (C-sharp major) and the lowered mediant ( A major). At this point, the Friska begins its journey of ever-increasing energy and pianistic bravura, still underpinned by alternating tonic and dominant harmonies. The alternating dominant and tonic harmonies quickly increase in volume, the tempo gaining momentum as the Friska's main theme (in F-sharp major) is approached. It opens quietly in the key of F-sharp minor, but on its dominant chord, C-sharp major, recalling a theme from the lassan. The mood of the lassan is generally dark and melancholic, although it contains some playful and capricious moments. From this point on, the composer modulates freely, particularly to the tonic major and the relative major. Although beginning on the C-sharp major triad, C-sharp minor is soon established as the home key. The first is the lassan, with its brief introduction. The piece consists of two distinct sections. Problems playing these files? See media help. The other themes were taken from the German pianist Heinrich Ehrlich. This theme was found in one of Liszt's Weimar sketchbooks. The title of this rhapsody is slightly misleading, as the introductory theme is Romanian, rather than Hungarian. ![]() Other pianists have arranged their own versions of the Rhapsody with changes beyond that of simply adding a cadenza, most notably Vladimir Horowitz in 1953. Liszt himself wrote several cadenzas for the piece, but they were rarely performed. Marc-André Hamelin composed a cadenza that has since become famous for its originality, musicality and playfulness, and Sergei Rachmaninoff also wrote a famous cadenza for his interpretation. Most unusual in this composition is the composer's invitation for the performer to perform a cadenza, although most pianists choose to decline the invitation. Offering an outstanding contrast to the serious and dramatic lassan, the following friska holds enormous appeal for audiences, with its simple alternating tonic and dominant harmonization, its energetic, toe-tapping rhythms, and breathtaking "pianistics". ![]() In addition to the orchestral version, the composer arranged a piano duet version in 1874, published by Schuberth the following year. Its immediate success and popularity on the concert stage led to an orchestrated version, arranged (together with five other rhapsodies) in 1857–1860 by the composer in collaboration with Franz Doppler, and published by Schuberth in 1874–1875. 2 was first published as a piano solo in 1851 by Senff and Ricordi. Although this prolific composer's works are highly varied in style, a relatively large part of his output is nationalistic in character, the Hungarian Rhapsodies being an ideal example.Ĭomposed in 1847 and dedicated to Count László Teleki, Hungarian Rhapsody No. These elements would eventually play a significant role in Liszt's compositions. The Hungarian-born composer and pianist Franz Liszt was strongly influenced by the music heard in his youth, particularly Hungarian folk music, with its unique gypsy scale, rhythmic spontaneity and direct, seductive expression.
